When you’re under pressurem being “nice'“ is not good communication

When we’re under pressure, some of us resort to being “nice” in communicating our intent, hoping the other person gets it. Most of the time, this approach ends up in disaster.

One of the most useful frameworks we came across that help leaders communicate with maturity is understanding the 4-communication style. It is based on these two questions:
1. How much do you respect your own needs?
2. How much do you respect others’ needs?

This creates four styles:
• Passive
• Aggressive
• Passive-aggressive
• Assertive

Most of us move between these styles unknowingly depending on stress, power dynamics, or fear of conflict.

But the goal is not to be "nice".
The goal is to be assertive.

Which style do you default to under pressure?
