What makes a leader inspirational?
You know that feeling when you meet a leader, and something inside you just says, “I want to follow this person”?
I’ve felt it before. And I’ve been told by my former staff and community that I inspire them too. But I wanted to “science” it: “What actually makes someone inspiring?” Because God knows, we need more inspiring leaders today.
Here’s what I’ve found after doing some reading. Inspiring leaders consistently do four things (see image):
H – Hope – They provide a compelling vision for the future. They help us see beyond the present struggle.
O – Openness – They communicate clearly, simply and transparently, but more than that, they are real.
P – Personable – They connect emotionally and genuinely with people. You feel their presence, their care, their belief in you. They are good with the “little little’ things to make people feel seen, heard and valued everyday.
E – Embodiment – They don’t just say inspiring things; they consistently live out their values, day-in, day-out.
We are drawn to inspiring leaders because they lead with H.O.P.E. They build movements and winning teams. They make us feel like something great is possible. And the best part? Anyone can be an inspiring leader if they just follow this formula.
Which of these four resonates most with you?
