P.A.U.S.E. : A mindful leadership habit

Most of us lead on autopilot. We react instead of responding, especially in high-pressure situations - and that’s not always helpful to our people.

In my early days as a young manager, I believed that being an effective leader meant moving fast and making quick decisions. Working in an advertising agency back then, everything felt urgent. There were times when my emotions drove my actions. Before I knew it, I had said things or behaved in ways that hurt my teammates.

That’s when I learned that true leadership isn’t about speed - it’s about intention. At its core, leadership is about making people feel valued, about showing them that they matter. And that doesn’t happen through knee-jerk reactions.

So, before you respond to that email, give that feedback, or make a big decision, try this: P.A.U.S.E.

  • P – Pay Attention to the situation, your emotions, and others’ feelings. Be careful at the point, as one can take things personally instead of viewing the situation objectively.

  • A – Acknowledge your initial reaction without acting on it immediately.

  • UUnderstand the deeper needs and potential consequences. Ask questions and really listen to their perspective.

  • SShift your mindset from reaction to response - what’s the best way forward?

  • EEngage with clarity, compassion, and purpose.

Great leaders reflect before they act. A simple pause can make all the difference between a thoughtless reaction and an intentional response.
